Frequently asked questions

Do I need to keep bees to join?

No. Membership is open to anyone who supports our aims, including people who simply care about bees.

I want to start beekeeping. Where do I begin?

Begin by learning: attend a beginners' workshop, visit an apiary and find a mentor before buying a colony. Our Learn About Bees page has a starter guide.

There is a swarm in my garden. What should I do?

Keep calm and keep your distance — swarms are usually not aggressive. Do not spray or disturb the bees. Call us on +356 2144 4576 so a beekeeper can collect it.

Is it a bee or a wasp?

Honeybees are furry and golden-brown; wasps and hornets are smooth and shiny, often with bright yellow or reddish markings. Oriental hornets are large and reddish-brown with yellow bands.

What should I do if I am stung?

Scrape the sting out sideways with a fingernail or card, wash the area and apply a cold compress. If there is swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, call 112 immediately.

Is the association a registered organisation?

Yes. We are a voluntary organisation enrolled in Malta under registration number VO/0550, and we are non-profit.
